Peak Newfoundland

colourful sheds in Cavendish

If you are looking for more pictures of Newfoundland than you can shake a stick at – I got you covered! I didn’t get a whole lot of time off in a row this summer. But when I did have some time off, I visited as many places on the rock as I could (and could afford to).  And of course I took way too many pictures. So, in an effort not to bore you out of your mind, I have put together this selection of my ‘peak Newfoundland’ pics.

Dildo

My partner and I love Dildo and the Baccalieu trail area. It is a great place to get away from the city. The people are fantastic and there are lots of beautiful beaches and wonderful communities in the area to visit.  We especially like the Dildo Brewing Company and the Dildo Dory Grill – awesome places to have a bite and a drink and enjoy the view. (And of course, you get to say ‘dildo’ a lot – great for those like me who are immature at heart.)

St. Joseph’s

We visited my partners folks at their cottage in St. Joseph’s – they are the best hosts you could ask for. We had a fun visit and are really looking forward to going back. They have a beautiful place in lovely setting. And I saw a bat, a loon, and got barked at by a squirrel, so that was cool too!

Grand Falls Windsor and Botwood

One of my brothers and his family live in Grand Falls Windsor. So my sister, niece and I make an annual trip there every year. I really look forward to it and we always have fun when we are there. Besides having family there, it is a nice place with much better summer weather than we get here in St. John’s. This year we went twice, as my sister was insisting on her goal of a ‘never-ending summer.’ It worked for a while.

One of our new favourite places to visit when we are in Grand Falls Windsor is the extensive and engaging Corduroy Brook nature trail. Among many other things, there are all kinds of birdhouses there – they are adorable.

We also visited Botwood while we were out that way. There are beautiful murals all over the town.

Twillingate

Of all the little trips I took this summer, Twillingate was my absolute favourite. I got to go there twice – once with my sister and sister-in-laws, and once with my partner. It’s a great little place with very friendly people, lots of artists studios and shops, and great views everywhere you turn. And I can honestly say I never had a bad meal there the whole trip – there are some really great places to eat. We also saw our first Rock_Vandal art in Twillingate and were tickled when we found two more in the community – they are so cute and fun and unexpected!

During my first trip, Twillingate was in the run for Hockeyville and the whole town was totally involved. Everyone was talking about it and texting in their votes – there was a parade and everything. It was great to be a part of that for a couple of days. (They won!)

We were all really sad that the beautiful Ashbourne House in Twillingate burned down in September. We spent an afternoon beachcombing right across the road from the historic house – such a loss.

You can’t go to Twillingate without taking a trip up to Long Point lighthouse, at Crow Head. Apparently, this lighthouse is one of the most photographed in Newfoundland.

Heart’s Ease and Bellvue beaches

On the way back from Twillingate, we spent some time in the Clarenville area and also visited a few beaches on the way back to St. John’s. We got to see a whale pretty close up, quietly feeding just off Bellvue beach.

West coast and Ferryland

And finally (I bet you thought this would never end), my partner and I went to the west coast for a few days to visit family. And I did a very nice day trip to Ferryland with some of my family.
